Dairy Free Mashed Potatoes - Olivia Adriance

I’ve tested a fair share of mashed potato recipes. I wanted to nail the ultimate recipe for all your holiday needs.

Hands down, these are the best Dairy-Free Mashed Potatoes you’ll ever make.

They’re fluffy, creamy, and whipped — just like mashed potatoes should be — without any butter, cream, or dairy!

Mashed potatoes are a staple on my Thanksgiving and Christmas dinner plates.

It’s an essential component to the meal, soaking up all the juicy gravy from either my Simple Oven-Roasted Turkey Breast with Gravy or my Chuck Roast with Au Jus.

I can’t wait to see these hit your spread this year. Just be forewarned, that everyone (dairy and non-dairy eaters) will be requesting this side dish for every holiday.

Cheers!

Ingredients for Dairy-Free Mashed Potatoes

I love a simple side dish, especially one that only requires five (!) ingredients. Here’s everything you’ll need.

Ingredients for Dairy Free Mashed Potatoes - Olivia Adriance
  • Potatoes: For the creamiest mash, choose either Yukon gold or Russet potatoes. For either variety, be sure to peel them!
  • Kosher Sea Salt: Season as you please.
  • Dairy-Free Sour Cream: I used @foragerfoods which is made from coconut and cashews.
  • Unsweetened Almond Milk: @malkorganics almond milk is a favorite of mine because it’s made with just raw almonds, water, and Himalayan salt. Any type of non-dairy milk will do, or use regular milk if you aren’t dairy-free.
  • Dairy-Free Butter: @miyokoscreamery to the rescue for making a dairy-free butter that is actually enjoyable to eat!

How to Make The Best Dairy-Free Mashed Potatoes

To start, peel the potatoes and cut them into evenly sized, 2-inch chunks. Add the cubed potatoes to a large pot and cover with about 1 inch of cold or lukewarm water. Add 1 teaspoon of salt.

Bring the water to a boil. Reduce the heat to a gentle boil and cook, uncovered, until the potatoes are fork-tender, or about 14 to 16 minutes.

Drain the water from the potatoes, add them to the pot or bowl that you want to mash them in (it could be the same pot you boiled them in), and begin to mash.

You can use a hand masher or a hand mixer. If using a hand mixer, start mashing on a low setting to avoid a mess!

Stop the mixer and add the dairy-free sour cream, plant-based milk, and dairy-free butter. Continue mashing until no large lumps remain, adding more milk or sour cream to your preference. Taste and season with salt, as needed.

Transfer the mashed potatoes to a serving bowl and garnish with chives. Serve and enjoy!
