Blue Spirulina Iced Matcha Latte with Homemade Cashew Milk - Olivia Adriance

You may already know that my obsession with matcha runs deep!

While my Honey Matcha Latte is now an everyday staple for me, sometimes I like to change things up. When I’m in the mood for a super beautiful drink then I’m bound to make this Spirulina Iced Matcha Latte with Creamy Honey Cashew Milk

I ordered a similar matcha latte during a recent trip to San Diego every single morning. I just couldn’t get over how pretty it was and I really loved the addition of spirulina.

I knew that I just had to recreate it at home to get my fix! 

Spirulina and matcha combined can have an earthy taste, which is why I like to pair it with my Creamy Honey Cashew Milk.

If you want to use your own nut milk, that’s totally fine. You just may want to add a bit of honey to your drink to offset the earthiness.

Benefits of Blue Spirulina 

Spirulina is a blue-green algae with lots of health benefits. 

First of all, it’s considered a complete protein. For my plant-loving friends, adding spirulina to your diet is a great way to add some natural protein to your meals. 

Second, it’s a powerful antioxidant. One look at the bright color and you just know that there is a lot of goodness packed into this powder.

Third, spirulina is known to have anti-inflammatory properties so it helps reduce inflammation in the body. 

Ingredients for Cashew Milk + Spirulina Iced Matcha Latte

This recipe is a two-for-one! First up, is my go-to Creamy Cashew Milk which I make every week for all of my lattes. Then we have the Spirulina Iced Matcha Latte. Whether you decide to make your own nut milk or not is up to you, but I’m breaking both ingredient lists down for you here.

  • Raw Cashews: Cashew milk is the easiest nut milk to make because it doesn’t require any straining! Raw, soaked cashews blend seamlessly into the water. 
  • Coconut Cream: This is the top layer of a chilled can of coconut milk. 
  • Honey: This natural sweetener helps offset the earthiness of matcha and spirulina. Add additional honey to taste. 
  • Vanilla Extract: This enhances the cashew milk’s overall taste.

  • Sea Salt: Just a touch of salt to help balance out the flavors.
  • Matcha: There are SO many matcha powders available today, which is why I recently did a taste test to evaluate my favorite picks. For this recipe, I used @piquelife matcha. 
  • Blue Spirulina Powder: You may not have this ingredient in your cabinet, but I promise it’s worth seeking out. It can be added to smoothies as well for a delicious nutritional boost. I used KOS organic blue spirulina powder

How to Make Spirulina Iced Matcha Latte

Make the Cashew Milk

If making the cashew milk, add the raw cashews to an airtight container and cover with water. Soak overnight or for at least 4 hours. Once soaked, strain the cashews and rinse until the water runs clear.

Add the soaked cashews, water, coconut cream, honey, vanilla extract, and sea salt to a high-speed blender (such as a Vitamix) and blend for 2 minutes until frothy. 

Store in the fridge in an airtight container for up to a week. Use it anywhere and everywhere that you’d use nut milk — smoothies, overnight oats, etc.! 

Make the Matcha Latte

To make the spirulina matcha latte, whisk together the matcha and 2 ounces of water.

Take your serving glass, add ice, and pour the matcha on top. Add ¼ cup of cashew milk, or enough to taste.

In a separate glass, whisk together 1/4 cup cashew milk and spirulina. Pour over the matcha. Sip and enjoy!

Ingredients 

Cashew Milk:

  • 1 ½ cups soaked raw cashews (soaked at least 4 hours or up to overnight)
  • 7 cups water
  • ¼ cup coconut cream
  • 1 tablespoon vanilla extract
  • 3 tablespoons honey
  • 1 teaspoon sea salt

Spirulina Matcha:

  • 1 teaspoon matcha powder (I used Pique Life matcha)
  • 2 ounces water
  • ½ teaspoon blue spirulina powder (I used Kos)
  • ½ cup cashew milk (divided)

Instructions 

Make the Cashew Milk:

  • Add your raw cashews to an airtight container and cover with water.
  • Soak overnight or for at least 4 hours.
  • Once soaked, strain your cashews and rinse until the water runs clear.
  • Add the soaked cashews, water, coconut cream, honey, vanilla extract, and sea salt to a high-speed blender and blend for 2 minutes until frothy.
  • Store in the fridge in an airtight container for up to a week.

Make the Latte:

  • Whisk together the matcha and 2 ounces of water.
  • Take your serving glass, add ice, and pour the matcha on top. Add 1/4 cup of cashew milk, or to taste.
  • In a separate glass, whisk together 1/4 cup cashew milk and spirulina. Pour over the matcha. Enjoy!

Notes

The above recipe is for a full batch of Cashew milk so you will have leftovers. Use it in other latte recipes, blend into smoothies, stir into overnight oats, or add it to my Cinnamon Apple Breakfast Quinoa Porridge for a nutty flavor. 
If you’d prefer not to make your own nut milk, that’s fine! You may want to add a touch of honey to your latte to balance out the flavors. 
I haven’t tried this as a hot latte because I tend to prefer iced matcha lattes.
