A luxurious hot chocolate recipe that will warm you up on the coldest of evenings! This dairy-free version is protein-packed thanks to bone broth and chocolate protein powder.

I’m finally sharing with you all today my version of the cozy wintertime beverage — Bone Broth Protein Hot Chocolate.
This viral recipe has been showing up on my feed for years and I decided to give it a go, with my own spin of course!
You probably know by now that bone broth is one of my go-to ingredients. It’s rich in protein, and collagen, meaning it’s good for the skin, nails, hair, and joints.
It also supports gut health and is something that I reach for when my tummy is upset or in distress.

Bone broth is especially good for you during cold and flu season because it is full of amino acids, which help the immune system.
And I promise, if you follow my recipe you won’t be able to tell that you’re sipping on broth. The addition of chocolate protein powder and raw cacao amps up the chocolatey flavor.
When you’re craving something sweet and warm, go ahead and give this viral recipe a try!
It takes less than 5 minutes to whip together and will absolutely satisfy your chocolate cravings. Cheers!
Ingredients for Bone Broth Hot Cocoa
A steaming cup of hot cocoa is only a few ingredients away. Add everything to a blender — the Vitamix is the ultimate workhouse in my kitchen — and you’ll be sipping in no time. Here’s what you’ll need.

- Bone Broth: I used chicken bone from @kettleandfire because it tends to have a milder flavor than beef bone broth.
- Nut Milk: To make this recipe extra dreamy, I used my infamous Creamy Vanilla Cashew Milk. You can swap this for any nut milk you have on hand or regular milk if you aren’t dairy-free.
- Maple Syrup: Instead of the traditional sugar added to hot chocolate, maple syrup adds a caramel-like flavor that pairs so well with chocolate.
- Chocolate Protein Powder: I used @truvani chocolate protein powder which has 20 grams of protein per scoop! This plant-based protein doesn’t aggravate my stomach like a lot of the other ones and uses only clean ingredients.

Pin It- Raw Cacao Powder: Raw is key here! Cacao powder is oftentimes supplemented with sugar. To control the added sugar in my diet, I buy raw cacao powder and add a natural sweetener (like maple syrup or honey) to my treats instead.
- Flavorings: Since it is the holidays, I used a combo of both vanilla and peppermint extract. These aren’t required but add a little something-something to the beverage.
- Sea Salt: The sweet-salty combo is one of my favs so adding a bit of sea salt really brings out the chocolate flavor.
- Garnishes: Totally optional, but a dollop of dairy-free whipped cream and crushed peppermint candies to add to the rim are a festive decoration that won’t go unnoticed!

How to Make High Protein Bone Broth Hot Chocolate
Measure out all of the ingredients — bone broth, milk, maple syrup, chocolate protein powder, cacao powder, vanilla extract, peppermint extract, and sea salt — and add them into the Vitamix and secure the lid.

Start the blender at its lowest speed, then quickly increase to its highest speed.
Blend for 6 minutes to warm it in the Vitamix.
Serve hot with a dollop of dairy-free whipped cream and enjoy!
Blender Tip
I used a Vitamix blender which blends at a high enough speed that it will heat the ingredients to the perfect toasty temperature. If you are using a regular blender, you only need to blend the mixture for 1 minute, and then transfer the mixture to the stovetop and warm on medium-low heat until the desired temperature.
Tips and FAQ for Bone Broth Hot Chocolate
I’m asked this question a lot! No, the savory flavor is masked thanks to the combo of chocolate protein powder, raw cacao powder, and maple syrup.
I haven’t tried it personally, but I’ve seen others use beef bone broth. If you try it, let me know what you think over on Instagram @olivia.adriance!
