Banana Bread Matcha Latte - Olivia Adriance

On any given day, I’m a devoted fan of a pure matcha latte. But every once in a while, it’s nice to switch things up a bit.

Enter my Banana Bread Matcha Latte, inspired by Blank Street’s viral drink creation and reimagined with simple, wholesome ingredients. Think, a subtle hint of banana bread in latte form.

You’ll start by making a super simple banana bread syrup. No hidden ingredients, no “natural flavors” that are sneakily added to many coffee shop beverages.

This pure syrup is made with one large banana, maple syrup, cinnamon sticks, nutmeg, and vanilla extract. That’s it!

Just add a few tablespoons to your favorite matcha latte and let me tell ya…it’s a viral recipe for a reason… Cheers!

Key Ingredients for Banana Bread Matcha

Making a matcha at home can be a true moment of self-care. This recipe goes the extra step with a banana bread-flavored syrup, but once you make it, you can use it throughout the week. Here’s what you’ll need.

Ingredients for Banana Bread Matcha Latte - Olivia Adriance
  • Banana: Ripe bananas don’t necessarily have to be made into banana bread! Make this banana bread syrup using one large, ripe banana.
  • Maple Syrup: This natural sweetener enhances the caramel-like taste of the ripe banana.
  • Cinnamon Sticks: The whole cinnamon sticks tend to be more flavorful than cinnamon powder.

  • Ground Nutmeg: A pinch of this spice introduces a warm, slightly nutty taste.
  • Vanilla Extract: A must for any good banana bread recipe, and a must for this matcha recipe too.
  • Matcha Powder: For a superior at-home matcha, look for a high-quality, ceremonial-grade matcha. I rotate through a few brands, including @piquelife, but I also conducted a Matcha Taste Test to sample some of the most popular options out there.
  • Milk: Use whatever you prefer, but I highly suggest my Creamy Vanilla Cashew Milk if you haven’t tried it yet!

How to Make Banana Bread Matcha Latte

Make the syrup

In a small saucepan, combine the mashed banana, water, maple syrup, cinnamon sticks, and nutmeg.

Bring to a boil, then reduce to a simmer and simmer for 15 minutes, stirring occasionally.

Remove from the heat and stir in the vanilla.

Strain the mixture through a fine mesh sieve, and pour the banana bread syrup into an airtight glass container. Store in the refrigerator for 5-7 days.

Make the latte

Add the water to a small glass or bowl. Spoon the matcha powder through a fine mesh sieve to break up any clumps.

Whisk the matcha into the water in a front-to-back motion until slightly frothy on top.

Add ice to your serving glass. If you want to make a hot matcha, omit the ice and use hot water instead! Pour in the matcha and top with milk of choice.

Add 1 to 2 tablespoons of banana bread syrup. Sip and enjoy!
